Jewish Shtetls of Latgale (Vitebsk Governorate)
The Jewish communities represented in Rootera's 1897 census collection were part of the Pale of Settlement of the Russian Empire. In these cities and shtetls, families lived for centuries — merchants, craftsmen, rabbis. The census captured their names, professions and addresses — a rare testimony to this vanished world.
