Driven by local trade, crafts, and notable bristle-processing factories, the town operated as a bustling commercial and labor hub. For generations, its landscape of active market squares, numerous synagogues, and the historic Plater family estate (famous for its grand palace and the Church of Saint Louis with the relics of Saint Donatus) anchored Kraslava as a major cultural and religious center of Latgale.
