1897Census of Dagda
Vitebsk Governorate, Russian Empire

In 1897, Dagda was officially classified as a market town (mestechko) in Dvinsk Uyezd of the Vitebsk Governorate of the Russian Empire, within the Pale of Settlement. Like many Latgale market towns, its economic life centered on a local manor estate alongside a market square where trade and crafts were concentrated. Dagda had a substantial Jewish population engaged primarily in trade and small-scale commerce, living alongside Latgalian Catholic peasants, Russian Orthodox and Old Believer residents, and other local communities. As one of the officially enumerated settlements in the 1897 census, Dagda's census records constitute an important source for genealogical research in the Latgale region.
